President Biden to Launch Federal Workforce Training and Climate Service Initiative

President Biden is set to sign an executive order on Wednesday, unveiling a federal workforce training and climate service initiative aimed at combating climate change. Dubbed the "American Climate Corps," this program will mobilize over 20,000 Americans, providing training and employment opportunities in conservation, clean energy, and environmental justice projects. The primary objective is to prepare corps members for future roles in both the public and private sectors.

The American Climate Corps will engage in a broad range of climate-focused projects, such as safeguarding coastal wetlands from storm surges, promoting clean energy adoption, managing forests to prevent wildfires, implementing energy-efficient solutions, and more. All programs under the American Climate Corps will offer paid experiences with consistent program standards and pathways to quality employment in various sectors. Notably, no prior experience is required for applicants.

Furthermore, the White House revealed that five states—Arizona, Utah, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Maryland—are also launching their own climate corps initiatives in collaboration with the federal effort. These state-based groups will work alongside the American Climate Corps to ensure young people nationwide can serve their communities while gaining paid opportunities to address climate change.

This announcement follows calls from environmental activists, including the Sunrise Movement, urging President Biden to establish a climate corps. Additionally, Senator Ed Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with other Democratic lawmakers, recently wrote to the president, advocating for the immediate creation of a climate corps and reintroducing the Civilian Climate Corps for Jobs and Justice Act. This executive action underscores the administration's commitment to addressing the climate crisis and mobilizing the nation's workforce toward sustainable solutions.
